A Hot New Niche: Food, Nutrition and Beauty
The December 2008 issue of Fast Company (one of my favorite business magazines for creative types) features six, pioneering executives marrying food, nutrition and beauty into a hot new market.
For those of us in the health and healing arts, we've known for decades that what you put in your body affects your skin and overall appearance. It's great to see the rest of the world get up to speed.
Here's how this hot new trend can help your wellness business.
First, do you have a niche? The "beauty from the inside" market is ready for the pickin'. It's especially ripe for those with a background in fashion or the beauty industry.
Don't have a background in this field? Perhaps a passion for natural beauty or eco-conscious fashion know-how could be your leverage. I'm a big fan of choosing a niche and deciding to become an expert in your chosen niche. It doesn't take long and you'll quickly stand out from the pack. (The pack being, those professionals who do "a little bit of everything" and blend into a sea of similar service provideers without any clear, unique message.)
The food, nutrition, beauty niche would be a higher-end market to target. People worried about looking good and willing to spend serious money on improving their outsides through inner practices have disposable income. So you would have to be comfortable serving this market.
Think the wedding market, fashion or spas. That's the more obvious sectors. But there's plenty of room to find your unique share of this market for someone willing to think creatively.
Second, you can bet that these executives and their multi-million dollar companies have done their research. Why not benefit from the big bucks they spent? Check out there websites (which means pick up an issue of this magazine), go check out their products and see what they're working on launching. What do their marketing materials say? How is it presented? Where are they presenting their message?
What can you borrow for your own small business in terms of presentation, message and marketing efforts?
No need to reinvent the wheel.
Here's to your continued success and standing out from the pack,
Karin
