Eliminating the 'Unsubscribe to Your Newsletter' Pain

It happened the other day.

I received several “new subscriber” notices in my email inbox. Those always feel great.

I was feeling pretty good about myself, feeling like a real pro and that I was on the right track.

And then I got one of them. An “Email Removal Request” notice from my newsletter broadcast system.

I have a love - hate relationship with those notices.

On one hand, with every unsubscribe notice I get, I often get at least a handful of new, more interested readers who are a better match for my work.

It seems to be the Law of the Universe.

Logically, I can be grateful for those people who unsubscribe.

I rather have a list of readers who find what I write valuable.

And I know I’m doing something right when I start to repel people and attract others.

That’s the nature of taking a bold stand for something.

You can’t please everyone and trying to do so is a slippery slope to blending into oblivion for any small business.

None the less, these little notices make me feel like a loser.

And they tend to haunt me for days, over shadowing all of my accomplishments and successes.

So, eight years into my practice I decided to do something about it.

I called my newsletter service to see if I could click some “check box” and no longer receive them.

No deal. I can’t without also unsubscribing from all other really essential notices.

But then I got an idea.

I set up a “rule” in my Outlook that every time an email subject comes in with “email removal request” it automatically goes into my delete file.

In Microsoft Outlook you click on the email you want to set up a rule for, then right click, and select “create rule” and check the appropriate tabs.

Or you can go directly to Tools, Rules and Alerts, Add New Rule and follow instructions.

(If you don’t know how to create a “rule” in your email management software, just do a search in your help box.)

If hundreds of my newsletter readers unsubscribe, I’ll know it when I go into my system to send my newsletter.

But otherwise, I don’t need those little distractions.

Here’s to staying focused and celebrating your successes,

Karin
