Magazines for Business Expansion
It isn’t learning more about your modality that will make you a profitable practitioner or coach. It’s learning how to run a business. When I realized this, unfortunately several years into struggling with my practice, I set out to learn everything I could.
One of my favorite ways to learn new ways to grow my business and stay inspired is by reading a lot about, well you guessed it, business building. While the idea of cozying up with a marketing book may not turn you on, a fun and easy way to start is by getting a subscription to a business magazine.
Not all business magazines are created equal. When you’re in the “change your life” business not every business publication will be a match to your style, approach and mind set. For example:
Business Week – Too old school and too main stream for us “change your life” professionals. And it hits your mail box every freakin’ week. I can’t keep up with that. However, if you're targeting the coporate world, this is a good magazine to let you know what everyone is thinking.
Entrepreneur Magazine – Too focused on multi-level marketing and franchises.
Success Magazine – Too much hard-sales marketing and sales talk that turns me off.
Fortune Magazine – A little stodgy and only for very, very studious types.
However, there are a few magazines that I think are perfect for wellness professionals.
These magazines are cool, hip and innovative. They are full of fresh ideas (that you can bet your fellow practitioners aren’t thinking about), inspiring stories and an incredibly valuable business education for only a few bucks per month. Best of all, when I devour (and I do mean devour) these mags I feel like a part of a much larger community of people who unabashedly claim their power and success.
So without further adieu, here are my current favorites business magazines that I recommend:
Fast Company
"Fast Company sets the agenda, charting the evolution of business through a unique focus on the most creative individuals sparking change in the marketplace. By uncovering best and "next" practices, the magazine helps a new breed of leader work smarter and more effectively."
They report and profile the coolest, most cutting edge artists, companies and emerging geniuses in business who dare to break the mold of how to make money. This magazine makes me feel so excited to have my own business. Hands-down my favorite.
INC.
"Business resources and business information for the entrepreneur."
This magazine is really practical and filled with lots of how-to on all aspects of running a small business. I feel like I’m being mentored by the big dogs when I read this.
PINK
"PINK exists to promote a new generation of women who are making a significant impact on the world through their work and their lives-while being true to themselves."
This relatively new publication is in the style of a classic women’s magazine. It’s beautiful, has lots of fun tips, and enjoyable to look through. Yet it discusses serious issues facing women pursuing a successful career and a lifestyle in balance. I tend to see this more of a women’s group in paper form. I get a hot cup of tea, relax on the couch and enjoy "being" with other ambitious, conscious women via the magazine.
I can hear you now. “But Karin, I don’t have time to read!”
First, here’s a little rule of thumb: For every book on your modality you read, you must read one business educating book.
Also, at any one time I don’t have more than three to five magazine subscriptions. (I read more for sure, but I get them from the library or swipe them from my husband’s pile of magazines) If I add a new one, I’m usually ready to cancel another.
Next time you’re at the book store (getting more books on health, healing and personal growth) pick up one of these magazines and try on seeing yourself as someone who subscribes.
To your continous professional expansion,
Karin
